Microcement Bathroom: Where It Works, What Drives the Cost and When to Avoid It

A tiled bathroom is a grid. Every joint is a line your eye follows, and every one of them eventually darkens. Microcement removes them. One continuous surface runs from floor to wall to vanity without a break.

That appeal is real. But microcement is a hand-applied finish, and the result depends on what sits underneath it and who holds the trowel. This guide covers where it works, the colours and finishes, whether it can go over your existing tiles, what moves the cost, and when it is the wrong choice.

What Is a Microcement Bathroom?

Microcement is a polymer-modified cementitious coating applied by hand in thin layers, typically 3–4 mm in total. It is not laid like tile or poured like a slab. It is built up over the surface already there: concrete, plaster, plywood or existing ceramic tiles.

That thinness is what makes it useful in a bathroom. Floor levels barely move, so doors, thresholds and drainage falls stay where they are, and there is no demolition, debris or long programme.

  • No grout lines. Nothing to stain, darken or harbour mould.
  • Water-resistant once sealed. The sealer does the protecting, which is why its specification matters as much as the microcement itself.
  • One material across the room. Walls, floors, shower returns, vanity fronts, niches and benches.

Can You Apply Microcement Over Existing Bathroom Tiles?

Usually yes, and it is the main reason people choose it for a renovation. Because the finish is millimetres thick and bonds well to sound substrates, it goes straight over old ceramic or porcelain tile.

  1. Surface assessment. Every tile is tapped for bond, and anything hollow or drummy comes off first. The step most often skipped, and most often responsible for failure later.
  2. Cleaning and degreasing. Soap residue, oils and cleaning-product film interfere with adhesion.
  3. Mesh and primer. Fibreglass mesh is bedded in with a bonding primer, bridging grout joints so they do not telegraph through.
  4. Base and finish coats. Base coats build the body; finish coats establish colour and texture. Coat count depends on substrate and finish.
  5. Sanding and sealing. Worked back to matt, satin or polished, then sealed and cured before use.

When the tiles should come off instead. If they are lifting across an area rather than in a spot or two, if there is unresolved movement beneath, or if there is an underlying problem the new surface would only conceal. Microcement follows whatever it bonds to. It cannot fix a failing substrate.

Microcement Shower Walls and Wet Rooms

The shower is where the seamless argument is strongest. In a conventional enclosure the grout ages first. Microcement carries the same finish across shower walls, around returns and reveals, and down onto the floor with no joint to interrupt it, which is what an open, screen-free wet room depends on visually.

Sealed surfaces are water-resistant and stand up to steam and everyday bath products. On the floor, texture is adjusted at application, and anti-slip aggregates can be introduced where grip matters without giving up the minimal look. Falls and drainage are set by the substrate below, so the shower floor layout is resolved before the finish is applied.

Matt is an organic, raw cement look that absorbs light and is the most forgiving day to day. Satin deepens the colour while staying easy to maintain, and is the usual choice for floors. Gloss has impact but shows water spotting, so keep it to accent walls rather than shower floors.

Because the finish is decided at the trowel, no two installations come out identical. Two bathrooms in the same colour will carry different movement and cloud. That is the nature of a hand-applied surface, and it cannot honestly be judged on a screen. What Drives the Cost of a Microcement Bathroom

Professional application in India typically starts from around ₹250 per square foot, covering material and skilled labour. Where a project lands above that depends on several things, and understanding them is more useful than any single number.

  • Total treated area, not just floor area. Bathrooms are wall-heavy and vertical work is slower, so a quote priced on floor area alone will undershoot.
  • Substrate condition. The widest-ranging variable. A sound, level surface costs a fraction of one needing remedial work.
  • Coats and finish complexity. Textured and custom finishes take longer at the trowel.
  • Custom colour matching, and site access and city.
  • Sealer specification. Not all sealers are equivalent, and this line is worth reading carefully in any quote.

Set against that: no demolition, no debris disposal, and days out of use rather than weeks. On the other side, the sealer is a consumable and needs periodic renewal. Both belong in the comparison.

A proper quote itemises preparation separately from application, names the sealer, and makes clear whether supply and application come from the same party. Ask for an estimate on your bathroom and expect all three.

Design freedom. Tile is a module, and every module meets a corner, a reveal or a niche somewhere. Microcement has none, so it turns corners, wraps benches and lines niches without a cut. In a small bathroom a grid chops the room into segments, while a continuous surface reads as one volume and feels larger.

Time and disruption. Retiling means demolition, debris and weeks out of commission. Microcement over sound tile skips all of it, which for a household with one bathroom is often the deciding factor.

Upkeep. Neither is maintenance-free. Tile means grout to clean and eventually renew; microcement means a sealed surface that wipes down but needs resealing on a cycle.

Which works out cheaper. It depends what you put in the comparison. Material for material, microcement costs more than basic ceramic. Job for job, once demolition, debris and the labour of laying and grouting are included, the gap narrows and can close, particularly where existing tiles stay put. Against premium tile or stone, microcement is frequently cheaper outright.

Repairability. A genuine point in tile’s favour. A cracked tile is lifted and replaced; microcement is patched and blended, and making that invisible takes a skilled hand.

The Downsides of Microcement, and When to Avoid It

Every page selling microcement lists the benefits. These are the limits.

The material’s trade-offs

  • It inherits whatever is underneath it. A 3–4 mm overlay follows its substrate. Preparation is not a line item you can compress to save money.
  • Movement transfers through. Unresolved structural movement can reflect as hairline cracking. Fibreglass mesh reduces the risk, so omitting it is a false economy.
  • Repairs are harder to make invisible. Blending a patch takes the same skill as the original application.
  • The sealer wears. Resealing intervals depend on the sealer and how hard the bathroom works.
  • Finish consistency depends on the applicator. The largest risk in the category, and the one most underweighted when comparing quotes. Two applicators working from identical material will not produce the same bathroom.
  • It is not the cheapest option. It is priced as a specified architectural surface, not a budget refit.

When microcement is the wrong choice

  • When budget is the brief. If the object is lowest compliant cost, tile does that job and microcement does not.
  • When the substrate has an unresolved problem. Active movement, damp, an undiagnosed slab defect. Microcement covers it and hides it for a while. It does not fix it.
  • When you cannot get a proven applicator. The most important entry here. If the only quote is from someone who applies microcement occasionally alongside other trades, the finish is the risk, not the material.
  • When the property turns over quickly. Rentals and serviced apartments, where swapping one damaged tile beats patching and blending a zone.
  • When the design wants pattern. Colour blocking, geometric layouts, decorative tiling. Microcement’s whole value is continuity.
  • When nobody will maintain it. The sealer is a consumable. If resealing will not happen, choose a surface that does not depend on it.

If two or more describe your project, microcement is probably not the right call, and no version of the specification changes that.

Lifespan and Maintenance

Lifespan is not a fixed number, and any page quoting one precisely is guessing. It is determined by substrate preparation, applicator skill, sealer specification and whether resealing happens on schedule. Get those right and it is a long-life surface. Get the first one wrong and no amount of maintenance will rescue it.

Day to day, clean with pH-neutral soap and warm water. Avoid bleach-based, acidic and abrasive cleaners, which attack the sealer rather than the microcement beneath. Ask your applicator for the resealing interval on your specific sealer.
