What Is Microcement? Microtopping Flooring & Cementitious Coatings Explained

Microcement is also called microtopping. It is a polymer-modified cementitious coating, applied by hand in thin layers. Total thickness is just 3-4 mm.

It is not laid like a tile or poured like a slab. It is built up as a thin cement overlay directly on top of what is already there, whether that is a floor, a wall, a ceiling or a piece of furniture.

Microcement goes on in layers rather than in a single pass. A primer prepares the surface underneath, the coats that follow build the colour and texture, and a sealer on top does the protecting. Because microtopping flooring adds so little thickness and almost no weight, it works where tile and stone cannot. Over live floors. On upper storeys. Over surfaces you would otherwise have to demolish.

How Microcement Is Applied

Application is hands-on work, and the quality of the result depends heavily on what happens underneath.

1. Surface assessment. The existing surface is checked for moisture, level, cracks and general condition.
2. Preparation and priming. The surface is prepared as needed, then primed so the coats above bond properly.
3. Base coats. The body of the finish is built up in thin layers.
4. Finish coats. Colour and texture are established here, setting the final micro cement finish.
5. Sanding. The surface is worked back to reach a matt, satin or polished microcement result.
6. Sealing and curing. A sealer goes on and is left to cure before the surface goes into use.
