Yes, microcement can usually go over existing tiles. The tiles must be firmly stuck down, dry and free of movement. The finished system adds only 2–3 mm of height. If the tiles sound hollow, sit over failed waterproofing, or shift underfoot, an overlay will fail. Those tiles need to come out first.

Microcement over tiles is one of the most searched renovation questions in India, and the appeal is obvious. Ripping out a tiled floor means two weeks of dust, rubble and a room you cannot use. A microcement flooring overlay gives you a seamless, joint-free surface in a fraction of that time.
But almost every guide on this subject was written in Spain, Britain or Australia. Usually by a company selling a microcement kit.
Those guides assume Western bathrooms. Indian bathrooms are built differently, tiled differently, and cured through a monsoon. The advice does not transfer cleanly.
This guide covers what actually matters on an Indian project. That includes the cases where we tell clients not to do it.
Yes, microcement can be applied over existing tiles, provided the tiles are firmly bonded, stable, dry, and properly prepared. Microcement is a thin, cement-based coating mixed with polymers that is applied in multiple trowelled layers directly over the existing surface.
Because microcement bonds to the substrate rather than forming a separate structural layer, the condition of the tiles determines the performance of the finished surface. Stable, well-bonded tiles provide a suitable base, while loose, hollow, cracked, or moving tiles can cause the microcement to crack, lift, or fail.
Before application, the existing tiles should be assessed for bonding, movement, moisture, surface condition, and levelness. Glazed or non-porous tiles also require appropriate surface preparation and a primer to ensure proper adhesion.
In short: Microcement works over tiles when the existing tiled surface is sound and stable. If the tiles move or have underlying moisture or bonding problems, they should be removed rather than covered.

An applicator who carries the warranty thinks differently. Put a premium finish over a bad surface and you get a premium-looking failure. It usually appears in the first year or two, not immediately.
India uses more names for this material than almost anywhere else. Several suppliers brought different terms into the market at the same time.

So if one company quotes microtopping and another quotes microcement, you are probably comparing similar systems.
The name is not what matters. What matters is whether you are buying a complete system, with a matched primer, base coats, finish coats and sealer designed to work together. Or just a bag of powder.
Ask about layer count, total thickness and sealer type. Those answers tell you far more than the product name.
No quotation means much until the surface has been assessed. These three checks decide whether the job should go ahead.
Tap across the tiled surface with something solid. You will hear two different sounds.
A sharp, dense sound means the tile is properly bonded to the bed beneath it. A hollow, drum-like sound means it is not.
Hollow tiles are the single most common reason an overlay fails. The tile is already loose. Coating over it does not fix that. It simply means the failure takes your new finish with it.
A few isolated hollow tiles can sometimes be cut out and replaced. Widespread hollowness means the floor comes up.
Most Indian floors are finished in glazed vitrified tile. This matters more than any other single factor.
Glazed vitrified is made to be non-porous. Nothing soaks into it. That is exactly what you want from a tile, and exactly what a cement-based coating struggles to grip.
European guides often say to clean the surface well, or sand it lightly. On the softer, more porous tiles common in Spanish or British homes, that is usually enough.
On glazed vitrified, it is not.
Microcement over vitrified tiles needs real mechanical keying. That means scratching up the glaze so the coating has something to physically hold onto. It then needs a primer made specifically for non-absorbent surfaces.
Skip or rush this stage and the finish will lift. It looks perfect on handover and peels away in sheets a year or two later. This is the most common failure we see on Indian projects.
Moisture is the risk that hides. A tiled floor with a slow leak underneath can hold water for years without any visible sign, because the tile and grout cover it up.
Once sealed, microcement is far less permeable than tile and grout. Moisture that used to escape slowly through the grout joints now has nowhere to go. It will push through the weakest point in your new surface.
You will see it as blistering, patchy discolouration, or white salt deposits coming through the finish.
Look for these warning signs first:
Bathroom renovation without removing tiles is the most common reason clients ask about microcement. It is also where Indian construction differs most from the assumptions in imported guidance.
Most Indian bathrooms sit on a sunken slab. The structural slab is dropped lower. Plumbing runs inside that recess. Waterproofing goes over it, the gap is filled, and the floor is tiled on top.
So your tiles are just the visible layer of a multi-layer build-up.
This is very different from the timber floors or screeded slabs that European guides assume. It brings one clear advantage and one clear risk.
The advantage: your waterproofing sits well below the tile surface. An overlay does not disturb it.
The risk: if that waterproofing has already failed, nothing on the surface will tell you. An overlay then makes the problem harder and more expensive to trace.
Microcement thickness over tiles worries a lot of people. The answer is reassuring.
A complete over-tile system has seven stages:
The system works because of many thin layers, not a few thick ones. Applying material too thickly causes shrinkage cracking. It is also the most common shortcut taken by inexperienced applicators.
Total build-up over a tiled floor is normally 2–3 mm. On an uneven surface needing more levelling, it can be slightly more.
Two or three millimetres is small enough that doors usually clear without any change. Still worth checking any door that already catches on the floor.
Two details do need planning:
In wet areas, that curved junction is usually the better choice.
Five problems account for nearly every failure.
Every one of these comes back to preparation or specification. None of them is a fault of the material.
A standard bathroom or small floor takes several days. The time is driven by drying, not by application.
Each coat has to dry fully before the next goes on. The sealer then needs its own curing time before the room takes normal use.
Monsoon adds a complication no imported guide covers.
Cement-based coatings cure by drawing in water, and high humidity slows the evaporation each layer needs. In coastal cities during peak monsoon, the gaps between coats stretch out and the whole job takes longer.
Pushing the schedule causes real problems. Coating over a layer that has not dried properly leads to poor adhesion and a patchy finish.
Monsoon work is perfectly possible. It just needs a realistic programme rather than a dry-season one applied hopefully.
Published market rates for microcement flooring in India generally run between ₹250 and ₹500 per square foot. The figure moves with the system, the finish, the area and the condition of the surface underneath.
Smaller areas cost more per square foot. Preparation and setup cost roughly the same whether the room is small or large.
But the per-square-foot figure is not the real comparison. Total cost and total disruption are.

An overlay removes three costs that never appear on a material quotation: demolition labour, debris disposal, and the weeks during which a bathroom or shop floor earns nothing.
For hotels, restaurants and retail, that downtime is often the biggest cost in the whole project. It is the main reason overlays get specified on refurbishments where material cost alone would not justify them.
Microcement is not the budget option. It is a premium finish applied by skilled hands, and it is priced that way. What it saves you is disruption.
Whether microcement can go over your tiles depends on things you cannot judge from a photograph. Bonding, moisture, movement and the state of waterproofing you cannot see all decide the answer.
